Sureserve Compliance North (SCN) has demonstrated a strong commitment to community benefits through its partnership with North Lanarkshire Council (NLC). This case study highlights the various initiatives and programs SCN has implemented to support local communities, enhance employability, and foster sustainable growth.

Apprenticeship program

In September 2022, SCN created a permanent full-time Apprentice Engineer role within the NLC area. This initiative aimed to provide young individuals with the opportunity to gain practical experience and establish a lifelong career. The role, advertised across social media channels and targeted at NLC residents, received over 100 applications. Ultimately, the position was offered to an 18-year-old who was unemployed and claiming Job Seekers Allowance.

The apprenticeship program combines hands-on work at SCN with theoretical studies at North Glasgow College. Upon successful completion of the four-year apprenticeship, participants become qualified Gas Engineers. This program not only addresses the skills gap among young job seekers but also ensures a quality future labour supply.

Career events and work experience

Since May 2023, SCN has been collaborating with NLC's community engagement team to participate in career events. These events aim to increase awareness of the diverse opportunities within the industry and assist young people in transitioning from education to employment. Sureserve Compliance North experts attend these events to provide guidance and support, highlighting how they can help bridge support gaps.

GCS also offers work experience placements for secondary school students, who are mentored by the Head of Department during their placement.

Industry awareness days

Sureserve Compliance North hosts regular Industry Awareness Days at its in-house training center in Glasgow. These events align with The Young Persons Guarantee 16 to 24 program and provide a platform for young individuals to explore career opportunities and gain valuable industry insights. Participants enhance their professional development and contribute to shaping the future.

Mentorship and SME support

SCN is dedicated to supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the NLC contract. The company organises "Meet the Buyer" events to connect local businesses with SCN and showcase their capabilities. The mentors provide tailored guidance to SMEs, helping them navigate business complexities and achieve sustainable growth.

Examples of mentorship include workshop sessions on business best practices, IT skill training, and health and safety training. They also offer start-up advice and accreditation support, helping SMEs attain certifications such as ISO:9001 Safe Contractor and Constructionline.

Community projects

SCN's commitment to community benefits extends to local schools. In a project with Aitkenhead Primary School, SCN installed outdoor water taps and constructed a bespoke mud kitchen using reclaimed wood. This initiative promotes sustainability and provides children with hands-on learning experiences.

Conclusion

Sureserve Compliance North’s partnership with North Lanarkshire Council exemplifies a comprehensive approach to community benefits. Through apprenticeship programs, career events, industry awareness days, SME support, and community projects, SCN is making a significant impact on local communities. These initiatives not only enhance employability and foster sustainable growth but also contribute to a brighter future for the residents of North Lanarkshire.
